In the latest Charities Aid Foundation World Giving Index, Singapore moved up six notches from last year to take the 28th spot – our country’s best ever since the annual index was established in 2010. This compilation of an average of 1,000 responses from each of the 140 participating countries is based on three indicators: helping strangers, donating money and volunteering time.
For the third straight year, Myanmar was named the most generous country in the world – nine out of 10 people there donate money to charity. As for Singapore, we improved in the categories of helping strangers and donating money, but not so much with volunteering. Rounding out the top five are countries like the US, Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
And in last place? China. It did especially bad in the areas of volunteering and donating.
