The man arrested for holding a 60-year-old woman hostage in Yishun yesterday has been identified as Mohamed Faizal Mohamed Ariff, 41.

He was charged on Jan. 10 with possessing an offensive weapon without lawful purpose and is currently being remanded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

The incident happened at 7:30am at the void deck of Block 108 in Yishun Ring Road on Monday.

A video that was circulated showed that it took at least five police officers to disarm him.

The woman, who is not related to Faizal, sustained a minor abrasion on her chin and declined to be taken to the hospital.

Preliminary investigations showed that his urine tested positive for controlled drugs and he might face further charges once the full investigation is complete.

Faizal faces up to three years of jail time and at least six strokes of the cane if convicted of possessing an offensive weapon.
