Heated exchanges in the neighbourhood can turn deadly – just like this cautionary tale.
On Dec. 30 last year, 65-year-old Tay Kheng Hock was first charged with the attempted murder of a 37-year-old man.
Since then, his charge has been upgraded to murder on Jan. 6 after the victim, Tan Khim Hee died from injuries.
What the heck happened?
On the night of Dec. 28, Tay had poured accelerant on Tan and setting him alight with a lighter. The incident happened in front Heng Hock Minimart at Marsiling Crescent.
Tan was also the registered owner of the minimart. Tay on the other hand was also an owner of several other businesses including a beauty parlour called Wishing Well Beauty Centre.
There is no information yet as to what led to the incident.
According to the police, they had received a call for assistance around 10:12pm but when they arrived, Tan was found with serious burn wounds but still conscious.
Tay was arrested at the scene.
Upgraded charges
When he first appeared in court on Dec. 30, the charge sheet stated that if the circumstances and intention of the act were such that if it had caused the younger man’s death, Tay would have been guilty of murder.
Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries, although it is not mentioned when he had died.
The penalty for murder in Singapore is death.
