A 50-year-old man was charged with murder after allegedly killing a 27-year-old woman on Friday, Nov. 18.
Caleb Joshua Chai Shanmugam, a director of a renovation firm, is accused of killing his business partner, Rachael Ang Qi Ying, in a shop on Beach Road. According to police, the murder happened around 7pm on Nov. 9.
Shanmugan fled to Malaysia after the incident but was caught and brought back to Singapore.
Police found her body inside the shop on Nov. 12 after being alerted to a case of unnatural death. Paramedics who arrived pronounced her dead at the scene.
The cause of death is still unknown.
Before her body was found, she was reported to be missing for days by family and friends.
In a statement, the police said that the body found was linked to a missing person report made on Nov. 10 and, by then, they had identified Chai as a suspect.
The police sought the help of the Royal Malaysia Police to locate Chai and he was caught in Johor Bahru on Nov. 16 and handed over to Singapore authorities.
Before her disappearance, Ang messaged her mother to tell her she would not be coming home. Soon after, her friends and family received news that she was found dead.
Ang was cremated at Mandai Crematorium on Nov. 16 and a memorial service was held in Woodlands.
The case has been adjourned to Nov 25. If convicted of murder, Chai will face the death penalty.
