Netflix users in Singapore and Malaysia will have to pay more for their subscriptions from Jan. 9, the streaming platform announced today.
Those paying for the basic service will need to fork out an extra dollar, standard service users another S$2 and premium users another S$3, adding up to S$11.98, S$15.98 and S$19.98 per month, respectively, including taxes.
This is the first price hike since the platform launched in the city-state in 2016, Netflix told Coconuts Singapore.
For Malaysia, the subscription packages will go up by RM2, RM3 and RM4, adding up to RM35, RM45 and RM55, respectively.
The move has been attributed to the company’s heavy investment in content.
“These price changes include the government’s new indirect tax – as well as increases Netflix is introducing to reflect the significant investments we’ve made in TV and film over the last two years,” the company said in a statement.
Those who subscribe to the premium plan enjoy shows in Ultra HD and can stream on four different screens concurrently. Standard users are able to watch on two screens and basic users only one.
The platform is popular for original shows including Stranger Things and the recently released fantasy show The Witcher.
