Days after the Ministry of Home Affairs made it known that they’ve detained two teenagers who were self-radicalised by the violent propaganda of the Islamic State in Syria (ISIS) under the Internal Security Act, the militant group has hinted that Singapore might very well be the next possible target for attack.
According to a report made by S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies analyst Jasminder Singh that was published on The Straits Times, ISIS supporters from the region posted on social media that the Philippines and the United States are in their sights as well.
The unit that currently poses the biggest threat to the region was found to be Katibah Nusantara, an ISIS sub-group formed up by over 700 fighters from Indonesia and over 200 from Malaysia fighting in Iraq and Syria. Their expanding reach could very well influence the decisions made by ISIS, and make them turn their attention to Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, the news of the self-radicalised teen who was willing to conduct acts of terror here should he be unable to join ISIS was met with dismay by leaders. The 19-year-old had actually tried to recruit several people to join his violent crusade, but failed to convince them. The shocking part was that none of them alerted the authorities about it.
