Prime Minister Najib Razak has announced on Twitter that the proposed high-speed rail link between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur will be finalised in 2014.
The 330-kilometre long rail link, which will cost SGD15 billion, will shorten travelling time between the two cities to 90 minutes when completed in 2020.
During the special summit between Tokyo and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told Mr. Najib that Japan’s rail knowledge was second to none and strongly urged Malaysia to choose Shinkansen technology for the project.
The rail link project has also drawn the attention of three Japanese companies, Mitsui & Co, Sumitomo Corp and Toshiba Corp, who are very much willing to participate.
However, Mr. Najib said that it will require Singapore’s consent and added that it will be of interest to countries like China and Europe. He also welcomes the participation of Malaysian companies for this matter.
