Parking prices in Singapore are not as expensive as one may think, at least compared to other cities.

A recent survey by U.K. car service company Fixter ranked Singapore the ninth least expensive place to park among 65 cities.

The survey also showed that Singapore’s hourly parking prices, ranging from US$4.4 to US$5.1, are 62.17% less than the global average.

At airports and stadiums, where parking charges are said to be higher in many countries, Singapore’s vehicles pay around 70% less than the global average,  at US$1.52 (S$2.10) and US$2.78 per hour, respectively.

In other parts of Singapore, it normally costs S$0.60 for every half an hour to park a car at public housing estates and S$1.20 in places within central Singapore. Parking charges start from S$2 within the downtown Orchard district

We wish we could say the same thing about the prices of vehicles in Singapore. According to the 2019 Worldwide Cost of Living survey, Singapore remains the most expensive city in the world to buy and run a car. A Volkswagen Golf that costs around S$110,000 in Singapore costs around S$45,000 in Malaysia.

When we compare Singapore to other cities, New York has the most expensive parking charges in the world exceeding more than 300% above the global median price, followed by Boston, and Sydney, Australia, the same study showed.

Delhi, India has the cheapest parking, 80% below the global median price, followed by Buenos Aires and Cape Town, South Africa.

The study also projected the loss of parking revenues for some cities due to reduced traffic during the COVID-19 pandemic but had excluded Singapore in its figures.

It estimated that cities such as New York and London would have losses of upward of US$500 million.
