Good news for Singaporeans struggling to decide whether or not to buy an electric car. Singapore Power (SP) Group announced its plan to roll out 500 electric vehicle charging points by the end of 2020, with the first 30 scheduled to be ready by the end of this year.
Singapore, which launched its first electric car sharing service and charging stations in 2017, is making a big push to encourage residents to transition to the greener vehicles.
While there were still only 520 electric cars in the entire country at the end of last year according to The Business Times, the new network is part of SP’s plan for future growth. SP hopes the slew of new stations “plug a critical gap in scaling up EV adoption in Singapore,” The Straits Times reports.
And they are not just adding quantity.
One hundred of the new stations will be able to fully charge electric vehicles in 30 minutes — that’s three to seven times faster than most of the countries current ones, according to Channel NewsAsia.
SP is also developing a mobile app to aid drivers in locating the stations, which will include an interface for paying for their juice.
While the prices for refueling at the new stations will be announced later this year, the price tag for a new electric car is still hovering around S$100,000.
Considering these upcoming plans, it is odd to hear Tesla boss Elon Musk stating outright that the Singapore government is not supportive of electric vehicles.
