Singapore film ‘Sayang Disayang’ in the running for Oscars 2015

A Malay-language drama has been selected by the Singapore Film Commission to contend in next year’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Sayang Disayang is local filmmaker Sanif Olek’s debut feature and made its premiere in the Southeast Asian Film Festival easier in May. Featuring a star studded cast —including revered Malaysian actor Dato Rahim Razali, Singapore’s Aidli Mosbit, Rafaat Hamzah and more — the film revolves around the troubled relationship between an Indonesian domestic helper and her elderly paralysed employer who resents her cooking.

Sanif Olek’s feature debut is the first Malay-language film to be selected by Singapore for Oscar consideration. Last year’s breakout flick Ilo Ilo was selected as the Singaporean entry for Best Foreign Language Film but was not shortlisted as a nominee.
