A tiny Maltipoo was shredded by a dog ten times bigger than itself during a walk in the neighborhood.
The Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) told The Straits Times today that they are investigating an alleged attack between a 3-kilogram Maltipoo, a cross between a maltese and toy poodle, and an Alaskan malamute at Namly Avenue on Sept. 19.
“The AVS, a cluster of the National Parks Board, takes all feedback received from the public on animal health and welfare seriously. We received feedback regarding an alleged case of a dog attack… and we are looking into the matter,” AVS group director Jessica Kwok said.
According to owner of Maltipoo Jennifer Fan, her dog named Milo was on a walk with her domestic worker at around 7pm when the malamute’s owner signaled for them to walk past first. The worker hesitated at first but complied and that’s when the malamute lunged toward Milo.
The 3-year-old male maltipoo suffered a severed left kidney and two operations that landed it in the intensive care unit for more than a week. Treatment costs had racked to at least S$20,000.
The domestic worker also collapsed in trauma and neighbors had to call an ambulance, Fan said.
It was said that the malamute’s owner accompanied Fan to the vet.
Fan added that Milo is recovering well.
Singapore’s animal laws require larger breeds like the bull terrier, Doberman pinscher, German shepherd dog, rottweiler, mastiffs, Cane Corso, Dogue De Bordeaux or any of its cross breeds to be muzzled.
But other larger dogs, especially those with aggressive tendencies, which are not listed are also encouraged to be muzzled when in public areas to ensure the safety of all other pets.
AVS has put out guidelines for training and behavior rehabilitation to ensure “optimal animal welfare and behavioural outcomes” during the process.
