According to a recent study that surveys the environmentally friendly factors of countries in Asia-Pacific, Singapore comes in second on the top five list, just after Japan. Analyzing publicly available data to rank the countries, the report by finance platform ValueChampion talks about how the top scoring ones generate relatively less pollution, greenhouse gases, and public waste, as well as adopt renewable energy technologies, preserve green spaces, and promote public transportation.

The categories used to decide each country’s “green” ranking include energy, water, and air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, forest and green spaces, and public transport.

At first place, Japan is lauded for its reliable public transportation, clean water, and efficient energy industry. Next in line, Singapore displays low water and air pollution levels, plus efficient energy and transport systems. However, we could use some improvement in the area of reliance on renewable energy, in terms of total energy production.

Tied for third position, Australia tops the list in terms of low air and water pollution, while South Korea shows low water pollution, significant green space (over 60 percent of the country is forested), and an efficient train system.

Coming in fifth, New Zealand leads categories like renewable energy, green space, and air quality, but could use a boost in its efforts to reduce plastic consumption.

Just missing the top five, Hong Kong sits at sixth spot, followed by the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, India, Vietnam, and Thailand.
