Silverlens and four other galleries at Gillman Barracks closing

One of the pioneer galleries in Gillman Barracks is packing up and closing its doors.

According to its newsletter, May is the last month of operations for Silverlens Gallery. “It has been a wonderful stay and we will continue to still have a presence here through pop-ups, art fairs, and institutional collaborations,” it said.

Silverlens from the Philippines is one of several international galleries housed in the former British military barracks turned art cluster. An active presence in the world’s top art fairs, its ocus is on contemporary art by artists from the region.

Four other art galleries not renewing their lease are The Drawing Room, Equator Art Projects, Space Cottonseed and Tomio Koyama Gallery.

“We expect some turnover due to business decisions. We value the contribution of our galleries in defining Gillman Barracks as Singapore’s contemporary art enclave, and look forward to continue working together with them in a variety of ways,” Kow Ree Na from the Economic Development Board tells The Art Newspaper.

“We are also optimistic about upcoming new developments in the belt; such as a non-profit art space, F&B outlets and the introduction of creative business. We will be announcing further plans to develop Gillman Barracks in due course,” Kow adds.
