There is no way airplanes are getting in or out of Osaka’s Kansai International Airport these couple of days — the most powerful typhoon to hit Japan in a quarter century has caused massive damage across the country’s west coast.
With the airport currently closed thanks to flooding on its runways, Singapore Airlines (SA) have since canceled flights to and from Osaka between Sep 4 and Sep 7 — and it’s probably safe to assume that other airlines operating flights between Singapore and Osaka are following suit.
“As the flooding situation may be prolonged, customers are advised to defer non-essential travel to Osaka,” SIA wrote in a travel advisory on Facebook, advising customers to check their website regularly for updates about flights beyond Sep 6. Meanwhile, additional flights will be mounted to and from Nagoya.
The latest death toll from Typhoon Jebi has reached nine with hundreds more injured, while Kansai International Airport — located on an artificial island — has been cut off from the mainland. The gusts were powerful enough to overturn trucks on bridges and even swept an anchored tanker right into the bridge leading to the airport. Japan Today reported that there’s no indication yet about when the airport might reopen.
