Last Sunday evening, one shopper at Giant Hypermarket in Tampines was revolted to discover hordes of worms crawling inside several trays of eggs in the store. So naturally, he took a video of the scene — from the “Giant Farm Fresh Eggs” sign to the maggot infestation — which went viral on Facebook, horrifying netizens everywhere.

Unfortunately, even though he had time to post the video online, he apparently told The Straits Times that he did not inform the supermarket staff about the situation, as he was busy looking after his four children, who were “running around”. Perhaps tagging Giant on Facebook was the next best thing he could do, then?

Anyway, a Giant spokesperson verified that there were no complaints about maggots from customers at its Tampines branch, but several employees spotted the repugnant display the next morning during the pre-opening store check, Channel NewsAsia noted. The affected tray of eggs (and six others around it) was immediately discarded and the area was cleaned and sanitized.

The spokesperson also added that the same batch of egg trays across all Giant stores was checked and confirmed to be devoid of maggots. After an investigation by the egg supplier, the supermarket said that the eggs in that batch were “safe for consumption”.

As for what brought about the swarm of worms, Giant explained that a broken egg during delivery could have attracted a fly, which perhaps laid eggs in the tray, resulting in the presence of maggots.

The supermarket also apologized for the “unfortunate incident” and declared it would enforce tighter measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
