Shaw Theatres told Coconuts Singapore today that the collapse occurred around 4:45pm in Hall 6.

“They were quickly attended to by our staff and then by paramedics who arrived. They were subsequently taken to the hospital. Our priority is to provide support to our injured patrons,” it said in a statement.

The air conditioner and ventilation duct fell and landed on two rows of seats. Photos of the incident showed two men attending to a woman on the floor and clutching her head. Emergency responders from the Singapore Civil Defence Force were also seen wheeling the injured on a gurney.

Shaw Theatres said it is also working with its landlord, Gold Ridge Ltd., and relevant authorities on the investigation. A statement by Nex said it was also cooperating with the investigation.

Building and Construction Authority officials arrived later in the evening to investigate the area and check for further defects.

“A BCA engineer was sent to investigate the incident of the fallen Air-conditioning and Mechanical Ventilation (ACMV) duct at Shaw NEX cinema on 30 August. For safety reasons, BCA has instructed that the cinema be closed pending further investigation,” the authority wrote online yesterday.

It also instructed the building’s owner to carry out a detailed investigation of the incident and ductwork throughout the cinema.
