Shanti Pereira bags Gold medal, ending Singapore’s 42-year dry spell in 200m sprint event

Young sprinter Veronica Shanti Pereira entered history books yesterday when she managed to clinch the gold medal in the SEA Games 200m women’s sprint event.

The 18-year-old runner crossed the finish line in 23.60s — a personal best and national record, leaving the Philippines’ Kayla Richardson and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Oanh trailing behind at 23.71s and 23.92s respectively.

Her win ends the 42-year wait for a female sprinter to score gold since Glory Barnabas in the SEA Games back in 1973, according to various media reports.

This would also be Pereira’s second medal of the Games — she bagged the bronze medal on Tuesday in the 100m sprint.
