New York City fast-food chain Shake Shack is confirmed to be making landfall at Jewel Changi Airport soon, and the opening of the cult burger joint here has been a highly-anticipated event since rumors started swirling back in March.
Alas, Muslim eaters seeking to nosh on the brand’s signature juicy burgs and crinkle cut fries might be disappointed to know that Shake Shack’s first outlet in Singapore will not be halal-certified. This was confirmed by a spokesperson to Channel NewsAsia last week.
This shouldn’t come to a surprise though — the chain will be offering alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine alongside its signature flat top hot dogs and burgers. Among Shake Shack’s outlets overseas, we could only find that the chain’s branches in the UK serve halal chicken, but not so for its beef and other meat products.
Getting a halal certification from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) will be a challenge for Shake Shack though, as every single item and ingredients used across all outlets will have to adhere to Islamic dietary laws.
Just a few months ago, Subway officially turned halal —twenty years since the chain debuted in Singapore. Not saying that they should, but Muslims who are still interested in checking out what Shake Shack has to offer can always refer to MUIS’s guide to eating food. There’s always A&W at Jewel Changi Airport anyway, which will be halal-certified.
