Sentosa is Southeast Asia’s most expensive island: TripAdvisor

In an announcement that surprised almost none, Sentosa is named the least affordable island holiday destination in the region.

The world’s largest travel site recently released results from their latest annual TripIndex Island Sun report, comparing the cost of a day out and an overnight stay for two in 16 popular island destinations across Southeast Asia, taking into account the total costs for two people.

Sentosa holds the highest total TripIndex cost, recording the largest costs for meals, drinks, bicycle and kayak rentals and massage services. Although it might be the most expensive island destination, TripAdvisor notes that the locale is home to a diverse selection of themed attractions and experiences including Resorts World Sentosa, the Universal Studios theme park, the Southeast Asia Aquarium and more. Sentosa holds the honour of being the most costliest destination in the region for the second time running this year.

Indonesian destinations remain the most affordable South East Asian islands for travellers with Gili Trawangan, Bali and Lombok in the first, second and fourth positions respectively. The total costs for two to holiday in Gili Trawangan island are a little over $238, a helluva lot cheaper than Sentosa’s $1,005.

“TripIndex Island Sun gives travellers an overview of where their money will stretch the furthest as they plan their upcoming end-of-year holiday getaway,” says TripAdvisor spokesperson Jean Ow-Yeong. “This year’s results show that despite their popularity, Indonesia and Thailand are still home to some of the most affordable island getaways in Southeast Asia with Gili Trawangan, Bali and Koh Samui topping the list”.
