Self-funded sailing duo clinches gold in World Cup event; Singapore qualifies for olympics

While the nation celebrated with Ferrari’s Sebastien Vettel on his Singapore Grand Prix win (and have a laugh about the dude who wandered onto the tracks), two Singaporeans are clinching top accolades of their own in a different sport.

Sailors Justin Liu and Denise Lim scored gold in the Nacra 17 class event at the Qingdao leg of the International Sailing Federation World Cup. Their victorious voyage have efficiently secured Singapore a spot in the event at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, Channel NewsAsia reports.

Despite their success, both Liu and Lam may or may not be participating in the Olympics — they’re independent participants who self-funded their expedition. The Singapore Sailing Federation will be the ones determining who’ll be representing Singapore through internal trials, which makes their victory bittersweet.
