Selected MRT stations to close earlier for sleeper replacement

SMRT announced that from Nov. 2 to end of March 2015, train services at nine North-South Line (NSL) MRT stations will end at 12:30am on Thursday and Sunday nights. This is phase two of an ongoing sleeper replacement project set to complete in 2016.

The nine stations are Admiralty,  Bukit Batok, Bukit Gombak, Chua Chu Kang, Jurong East, Kranji, Marsiling, Woodlands and Yew Tee. They’ll account for over 47,000 out of the 188,000 sleepers to be replaced across the 131km rail network.

The first phase of the project, which affected stations in the Ang Mo Kio to Sembawang stretch, replaced 59% of the sleepers along the NSL. Early closure at these stations will be lifted from Nov. 1.

Train sleepers are rectangular supports that hold up the rails and keep them spaced accurately.
