Firefighters came across a grisly find yesterday afternoon after they put out a fire that broke out in an HDB flat along Aljunied Crescent — a charred body.

Police have since classified the case as one of unnatural death due to the fact that a cooking gas cylinder was in the bedroom where the body was found, The Straits Times reported.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was first alerted to the fire at 2:16pm, deploying firefighters to the scene at Block 99, Aljunied Crescent. Officers had to force their way through the locked main door, and managed to gain access to the burning bedroom through a corridor window.

Even before the SCDF arrived, the bedroom’s window panes had already shattered. It could be due to the “loud explosion” that neighbors who spoke to ST heard before they detected the blaze. Residents in the ninth through twelfth stories had to be evacuated due to the fire.

The fire involving the contents of the bedroom was extinguished with a water jet, with the body of a man found inside. Police are currently investigating the unnatural death, while SCDF is investigating the cause of the fire.
