One rooster must’ve had one heck of an emergency last Friday when it desperately made a couple attempts to cross the road to get to the fire station. Unfortunately, its plucky display of heroics was dashed by a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officer, who swooped in and saved the bird from becoming yet another victim of roadkill.
The video of the scene, which made the rounds on social media, showed the chicken waddling around an intersection near the Central Fire Station at 4:30am before an officer finally braved the feisty fowl’s flutterings against him and rescued it.
An eyewitness told The Straits Times that the rooster was crowing loudly for about 15 to 20 minutes in the middle of the road, causing passing vehicles to narrowly swerve around the animal, which was oblivious to the cars honking at it.
According to an SCDF spokesperson, firefighters on duty at the Central Fire Station had heard multiple car honks at the junction of Coleman Street and Hill Street, Channel NewsAsia reported. When officers made their way to the junction, they spotted the rooster in the midst of the chaos.
But instead of chickening out, corporal Sharif Rihanuddeen, a full-time national serviceman with the SCDF, quickly stepped up to remove the bird from the scene when the traffic lights turned red in his favor.
It is understood that the chicken was eventually moved to safety at “nearby vegetation”. The question of why the chicken crossed the road, however, will continue to elude answers.
