To help out in the country’s bicentennial celebrations, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will not be holding its annual SAFRA Singapore Bay Run and Army Half Marathon this year.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, SAF noted that the widely-attended events have to be called off to “better manage the overall tempo for a busy year”. The last time the marathon got called off was in 2015 when the army had been involved in the SG50 celebratory events.

The same Facebook post also announced that training within the SAF has resumed properly after the safety timeout put in place following the tragic death of Aloysius Pang on Jan 23.

The 28-year-old actor and National Serviceman had succumbed to serious injuries sustained during an overseas military exercise in New Zealand, prompting the SAF to suspend training for a thorough review of safety systems and training programmes.

“(We will) lower the duration, the intensity, and frequency of existing training… take some things out to do things better, at a more sustainable pace to focus on safety” Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Melvyn Ong said last month about the safety timeout.

The timeout was progressively lifted from Feb 7 onwards, and on Saturday, SAF confirmed that reservist training, physical proficiency tests, and other military activities have resumed as normal.
