New residents at Chua Chu Kang’s Keat Hong Mirage recently realised the irony of their HDB estate’s name when clogged rubbish chutes stunk up their block.
Buyer’s remorse might be an understatement in this case — just months after the newly erected build-to-order (BTO) estate was completed, residents are already facing serious health hazards. It’s definitely not all happy living at Block 817A along Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1, where the refuse chute has choked all the way up to the eighth floor, according to The New Paper.
Foul smells, maggots and other vermin — residents were shocked at how fast the rubbish started piling up in the chute. What makes it even more puzzling is that only 10 units in the block are occupied — many other homeowners are still renovating their flats.
HDB clarified that the refuse handling equipment on the ground floor had malfunctioned due to the overwhelming amount of bulky refuse and renovation debris improperly disposed into the chute.
Luckily for the families living at the foul-smelling block, the malfunction has since been rectified on Monday, with the piles of choked rubbish cleared.
