Some Indonesians can be a bit sensitive about other countries trying to appropriate their cultural heritage — remember the Great Indonesia-Malaysia “Dance War” of 2012?
Well, last weekend a tweet from former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, who was in Singapore to watch the Little Red Dot’s F1 Grand Prix, caused a culinary kerfuffle on social media:
Robe game is nice!! Nasi goreng lunch.. Keeping it local in #Singapore pic.twitter.com/qSs5tH3FMK

Naturally, the implication that nasi goreng was Singaporean did not sit well with many Indonesians.

And then it escalated… with cats.

However, their cries of culinary misappropriation received a nearly equal amount of pushback from Singaporeans. Including one highly sick burn about the haze.

Ohhhh, nasi goreng can claim but haze cannot https://t.co/xnkbv8wEQx
