Slabs of raw pork that were seen in a video being pecked at by birds at a food store in Yishun have been thrown away, according to an online statement on Monday evening. The authorities also said today it would take “enforcement action” for the hygiene lapses it found at the store.

This comes as a video of birds pecking away at the pieces of meat that were being hung to dry by the window of Lian Huat Roasted Delights circulated on WhatsApp and Facebook earlier this week. The clip showed the feeding frenzy taking place in the back of the store as employees served customers at the front. The Singapore Food Agency, or SFA, told Coconuts Singapore today it “promptly” inspected the place after being alerted to the video.

“SFA promptly inspected the stall upon receiving feedback about the video. We are taking enforcement action for the hygiene lapses detected. We have directed the operator to store all meat in the chiller or other covered receptacles to prevent contamination by pests and birds,” its statement said.

According to Lian Huat Roasted Delights, the affected meat have been disposed of and the window now netted.

“The pork was hang on top to dry for a short while before we keep in our freezer as our commercial fridge is full,” the statement said. “As we have customers at store front, we were busy serving the customers thus there was a slight delay in keeping the pork into freezer which leads to birds pecking on them.”

The Facebook statement, which included a photo of the now netted window, also called out the person who had recorded and circulated the video instead of informing the store.

It then said that the affected pieces of meat have been thrown away.

“As seen on the video, there were a total of 8 pieces of pork affected and we threw all of them away as it cannot be used anymore.”
