Under the moniker of Rambo Power on Facebook, 41-year-old Chia Choon Kiat expressed just as much bloodlust as the troubled Vietnam War vet played by Sylvester Stallone.
The man went on social media earlier this year to incite some rather twisted notions in the wake of the Benjamin Lim saga — the highly polarising case involving the 14-year-old’s suicide after a police interrogation. In reference to a Yahoo news article about Benjamin Lim on his Facebook page, Chia posted provocative comments that encouraged violence against the five police officers who handled the case.
The two comments read:
- “When people buay lun (cannot endure) already… Will need to take matters into our own hands”.
- “Please reveal the identity of the 5 plainclothes officers and we go handle them ourselves. Kill them”
In court, it was revealed that Chia had already incited violence against the authorities prior to the ones he made about the Benjamin Lim case. The Straits Times reported that Chia had set up a Facebook page called “Cigarette Butt Warriors”, and posted several angry posts against National Environment Agency (NEA) officers and their family members. A retaliation for being fined some 10 years ago after throwing a cigarette butt in a drain, it seems.
One such post involved the upload of a ritualistic killing of a pig, followed by, “let’s do this to NEA Cigarette Butt Officers.” Disturbing stuff.
In any case, Chia admitted to three of the eight charges thrown at him and has since been sentenced to six months in jail. His lawyer assured that Chia has since quit social media and is looking forward to building his life up after finishing his jail term.
