The latest toy craze to hit kids in Singapore might actually do them more harm than good, (no) thanks to recently appeared imitation products.
Rainbow Loom kits, which turn out vibrant bracelets and charms that can be gifted to friends and family, have enjoyed great popularity here, mostly for providing parents with quiet and creative time with their kids.
Numerous instructional videos have been uploaded on YouTube and some schools in the United States have even gone as far as to ban the bracelets for causing too much distraction.
But that’s not why an official caution has been issued here by SPRING Singapore. Counterfeit Rainbow Loom products, which they claim may contain lead and other toxic substances while featuring sharp edges that may cause injury during usage, have appeared in the market. The official makers have also published a notice on how to spot imitation products. These fake weaving kits are available at much lower prices in retail stores.
Manager of local Rainbow Looms distributor Sophie & Friends Daphne Ng, is considering legal action against retailers selling the fake products, and will take them to court if the problem persists.
