A fire broke out yesterday under a heavy downpour among shrines peppering one of Singapore’s Southern Islands.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said at midnight that they responded to a fire on Kusu Island where Malay shrines were located at 6:30pm yesterday. No injuries were reported.

“Upon SCDF’s arrival at the island, the fire was raging at a cluster of shrines located on top of a hill,” it wrote.

The extent of the damage was not immediately clear.

The force said it dispatched vessels from Brani and West Coast marine fire stations and backup firefighters from Marina Bay Fire Station.

It said the firefighters laid out a “vast number” of hoses from the jetty to the top of the hill that covered about 520 meters.

The fire was later extinguished with two water jets within an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Videos filmed from a distance and reposted several times online showed a large cloud of black smoke coming from a hill.

Kusu Island houses three Malay shrines and a Chinese temple where visitors frequent to pay their respects.
