Two police officers were on duty at the Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre on Mar 18 when an elderly woman rushed in carrying an unconscious child around 2pm. Senior Staff Sergeant Mohamad Azhar Abdul Aziz, 30, was tending to a public complaint when the panicked grandmother carried the limp two-year-old boy in and laid him down on the counter by 26-year-old Sergeant Mohamad Adam Roslan.
The woman spoke frantically in Mandarin to both officers, and while neither one understood what she was saying, they leapt into action to help the boy. Sergeant Adam called for an ambulance, and Senior Staff Sergeant Azhar checked the child’s vitals before applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). He held the toddler in one arm and did chest compressions with the other hand; soon after, he realized the boy’s teeth were clenched, a sign that he was breathing again but experiencing fits.
Another Staff Sergeant, 27-year-old Joshua Kwek, was having lunch on the second storey when he heard about the case. He immediately ran to the Sengkang Polyclinic next door, which had closed for the day. Fortunately, he spotted a doctor still in the premises and related the situation to him.
According to The New Paper, the child was brought to the doctor’s consultation room and later taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. His grandmother thanked the police officers for their quick-thinking actions that helped save the boy’s life.
