Proud SCDF personnel writes in-depth breakdown on everything about being a firefighter

As much as we’d like to stay as far away as possible from lifting content from Reddit (yes, we read your comments), this post by /u/toothyfalcon is a way too useful resource for us not to share.

Speaking as a self-proclaimed proud personnel of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the Redditor assures that his very lengthy post looking into the firefighting side of the force is by no means a public affairs stunt. Rather, it’s inspired by the puzzling lack of public awareness about the capabilities and the job scope of firefighting and rescue personnel — Jack Neo isn’t exactly putting out Ah Boys to Firemen anyway.

Turns out, his post is a far greater databank of information that even the lauded SCDF Facebook page won’t be able to provide. Complete with a glossary of abbreviations, terms, callsigns and other basic information like the type of incidents they turn out for, it’s a great overview into the range of things firefighters are expected to know.

Then there’s the FAQ section to make things easier. Here, /u/toothyfalcon (a throwaway account so SCDF can’t trace him back should they launch investigations) doesn’t hold back on answering controversial questions, from the more pugnacious personalities found in SCDF to the tough training SCDF rescuers have to go through.

Other frequently asked queries like the daily schedules in fire stations, career progression, vocations — they’re all pretty much answered. Highly useful stuff for those who’ll be entering the SCDF as part of national service and for those keen on signing on with the force. Read the rest of the post and bookmark it for yourself or friends on Reddit before someone decides to have it pulled down.
