Prosecution appeals for heavier sentences for the 6 convicted City Harvest Church leaders

It’s been a week since City Harvest Church founder Kong Hee and five other church leaders have been sentenced to serve significant jailtime, but it seems that prosecutors aren’t happy with the outcome.

What do they want? Even heavier sentences for the six convicted.

A release issued today by the Attorney-General’s Chambers  (AGC) stated that the trial’s prosecution has filed an appeal against the “manifestly inadequate” sentences.

“Having carefully considered the written grounds, the Prosecution is of the view that the sentences imposed are manifestly inadequate, in all the circumstances of the case,” wrote AGC. “The Prosecution has accordingly filed notices of appeal today, against the sentences imposed on all six accused persons.”

They aren’t happy with the fact that the heaviest sentence slammed down was eight years in jail, particularly for church pastor Kong. The other five were given between 21 months and six years.

In response to his sentence, Kong stated in a Facebook post that he was naturally “saddened by the length of it”.

“I am presently studying the judgment and sentence carefully with my lawyers, and will make a meaningful decision whether to appeal in due course.”
