A presidential prank reveals how S R Nathan touched the lives of many during his time in politics

In the wake of his death last night, dozens of tributes have been pouring out for the late ex-president S R Nathan. The lives of those he touched during his years in civil service as well as his 12-year term (the longest on record) as the nation’s head are countless — it would be an impossible task to give him an appropriate gesture of gratitude that matches his famed magnanimity.

Well, this one comes close. Back in May this year, the 92-year-old was treated to a heartwarming surprise when he turned up as a guest of honour to his own award ceremony.

The prank of presidential standing was carried out by feel-good youth organisation The Hidden Good, for which Nathan was invited to present an award to an “outstanding Singaporean”. Turns out, he was the very recipient — a fact that he probably figured out when he was treated to a video featuring his friends, former colleagues and many other Singaporeans he touched during his long, prosperous career in the government.

“Most people forget you when you are out of office but these people remember me,” the visibly moved man said. “It is very touching”.

Watch it and weep below. Rest in peace, good sir.
