Popular bookstore removes inappropriate ‘bromance’ comic after parents raise concern

After concerned parents flagged a comic book for its ‘inappropriate’ content for children, local bookstore chain Popular pulled the title from its shelves. The book in question? A mature content work titled ‘Bro, Don’t Like That La, Bro #2: My Bad Bromance’ by Malaysian comic blogger Ernest Ng. It’s a cheeky chronicle of the author’s life with his friends, adapted from his popular webcomic.

But after a post by Facebook user Mylilbookworm garnered hundreds of shares, Popular decided to take ‘immediate action’ to remove the book from its stores. Although it did mention in a statement that the book was meant for those over 18 and came with a warning label indicating its mature content. In response to this, some parents expressed their gratitude to being alerted to the book, while others said it was obvious the comic was meant for an older audience.

The Info-communications Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA) also received feedback from people about this comic book, and had this to say: ‘Publications which contain mature content should be treated responsibly to avoid accidental exposure to young children.’
