Police warn against falling victim to new round of software scams

Another scam is making its rounds around Singapore, with folks inadvertently falling victim to computer hacking by their own hands.

Police have received several reports of victims receiving calls from unknown individuals claiming to be from technical support sections of major software companies.

The naive victims would be told that their computers have been compromised and used for illegal online activities. They would be asked to download and install software from the internet and even provide user identification codes and passwords to the caller.

Some cases have seen victims being instructed to enter some commands into their computers, and everything would lead up to their machines getting remotely controlled by the callers.

The conmen would then convince victims to buy additional software by making online payments or provide credit card details.

Police have advised the public to ignore any caller that sounds suspicious, and never divulge credit card or bank details to the callers.

For those who’ve already followed the caller’s instructions, it’s best to change the computer’s log in password and all other passwords to online accounts, especially the financial ones. It’s always good to check if any virus or malware have been installed on your computer as well.
