Police ‘strike gold’ with latest thief nab

Police have arrested a 46-year-old man for stealing gold bars from a pawnshop at Bukit Merah Central.

The suspect was said to have entered the pawnshop on the pretext of buying gold bars.

Not bearing any suspicion, the pawnshop’s staff handed three gold bars to him for viewing purposes.

While pretending to view the gold bars, the suspect fled the scene towards Jalan Bukit Merah.

Police officers eventually caught up with him, and found in his possession two gold bars from the Bukit Merah pawnshop totalling SGD9,400 in value, as well as a third stolen from a South Bridge Road pawnshop valued at SGD6,200.

The suspect will be charged on Nov. 28 and if convicted, faces a maximum punishment of seven years imprisonment and a fine.
