Police nab serial abalone thief who struck supermarkets islandwide

Abalone’s a pretty important component for a decent Chinese New Year reunion dinner — important enough for one man to go on a stealing spree across supermarkets for the delicacy.

According to the police, a 43-year-old man has been arrested over his suspected involvement in a series of shop thefts in supermarkets across the island. In particular, thefts of abalone were reported to the police over a couple of days since Jan 16.

Officers from the Clementi Division and Jurong Division worked together to establish the identity of the serial abalone thief and arrested him along Jurong West Street 61 yesterday.

The suspect will be charged in court tomorrow for shop theft, and may face up to seven years in jail and a fine.
