Police launch investigation into MerlionTV’s red light district prank

MerlionTV’s recent antics may have landed them in actual trouble with the police.

The pranksters’ latest video sees them striking terror into the hearts of contraband cigarette peddlers in Geylang’s red light district by pretending to be plainclothes officers conducting a undercover crackdown operation.

Though it may have gotten some laughs, the Singapore Police Force fail to find the humour in it — the police have launched an investigation after a report has been made against the video, The Sunday Times reports.

The video, which has garnered over 77,000 views on YouTube as of writing, contains a disclaimer stating “We did not impersonate any police officers or law enforcement entities, Romeo is a secret code/slang used around most operations”, showing that the MerlionTV folks knew that they could get in trouble for pulling off the stunt.

The pranksters brush with the law aren’t anything new though. The police previously issued an advisory against their sort of mischief back in October last year, as they may “generate unnecessary alarm, fear and panic in the community”.
