Armed robberies at financial institutions are highly rare in Singapore, but it does happen even in such a heavily policed country. Look at the Standard Chartered Bank incident, for example.
Though not a bank, a Western Union branch (where you transfer and receive money overseas) at Ubi Avenue 1 was just robbed of over $2,000 by a knife-wielding man at about 10:50am today. According to the police, the robber — who wore a white helmet, black jacket and dark-colored long pants — forced a Western Union staff member to hand over the money before fleeing on foot.
“The staff was not injured and no other person was inside the branch at the time of the incident,” noted the police.
They’ve since released a CCTV still of the suspect, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to his arrest. And no, that’s not a stormtrooper cosplay.
Investigations are ongoing.
