A new player appeared in the ongoing turmoil among the members of Singapore’s premier family — and it’s none other than the son of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who also has something to say.
What Li Hongyi had to contribute was simple though — he didn’t need six pages of blistering critique like what his aunt and uncle released yesterday. No, he just had this to say:
Hongyi was referring to part of the statement that accused their brother and his wife of harbouring political ambitions for their son. His dad, the prime minister, has already dismissed his siblings’ allegations as well, calling their claims “absurd”.
Dr Lee Wei Li and Lee Hsien Yang released their public denunciation against their brother, who they accuse to be misusing his political power to make sure their dad’s house at Oxley Road doesn’t get demolished. Why would PM Lee go against the wishes of his legendary father, you ask? His siblings believe that the prime minister wants to milk Lee Kuan Yew’s legacy for their own political purposes and want Li Hongyi to enter politics as well. But as we’ve just found out from the man himself, he really doesn’t give a shit about politics, so that’s not going to happen anytime soon.
Hongyi’s yet another grandkid of Lee Kuan Yew who weighed in the now-public family tiff. Yesterday, Hsien Yang’s son Li Shengwu backed up his dad, asserting that his family has “become increasingly worried about the lack of checks on abuse of power” over the last couple of years. It’s apparently gotten so bad that Hsien Yang and his wife are already making solid plans to relocate in another country.
“I am looking to move on and wake up from what feels almost like an Orwellian nightmare,” said PM Lee’s brother to TODAY.
