Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is expected to update the nation at 5pm today on the country’s COVID-19 response and what to expect from the coming year.
His latest address comes as Singapore looks forward to fully easing COVID-19 measures and adoption of tracing tech becomes more widespread, which could see larger gatherings and bigger-scale events take place. Lee’s broadcast will be followed by a news conference led by Singapore’s coronavirus taskforce.
“It’s been some time since my last address on COVID-19,” he announced yesterday. “I will be doing it again tomorrow, to update everyone on the current situation and the outlook for next year. The Co-Chairs of the Ministerial Task Force will hold a press conference immediately after.”
Lee last spoke about Singapore’s COVID-19 response in parliament in September, when he conceded several missteps, such as not making face masks compulsory sooner. Singapore has reported 58,320 cases since the outbreak in January and 29 deaths.
Officials said last month that a majority of the population would need to be using the TraceTogether app or device before entering the third phase of loosened measures. Since then, the number of venues requiring their use has markedly increased.
At the end of yesterday’s post, Lee quipped to readers not to panic or rush to the supermarkets like they did earlier this year.
“But please stay calm – no need to stock up on anything!” he said.
