Robberies aren’t uncommon, even in low crime Singapore. But this 28-year-old man who barged into a convenience store with a mere penknife, thinking he could easily steal money from the elderly convenience store worker, was clearly underestimating the 78-year-old woman’s grit and determination. And the lengths she would go to safeguard the place.

According to a news release by the police, the man attempted the armed robbery in broad daylight yesterday afternoon at a shop along Tyrwhitt Road in Jalan Besar. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t count on the fact that the woman manning the joint would put up such a valiant fight.

Eventually, the thief fled the scene without any extra cash in his pocket, and the store’s fearless defender was left uninjured.

After a report was lodged, police handcuffed the suspect and seized the penknife along Lavender Street about five hours later.

The man will be charged today with attempted armed robbery. If he’s convicted, he could face between two to seven years in jail and receive at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Lesson learned.

Meanwhile, netizens had a field day with the young man’s failed attempted robbery.
