Plaque holding diamond-embellished UOB credit card for super-rich sports poor grammar

For a plaque meant to display a super-exclusive credit card for ultra-high net worth individuals, it’s a pity that the copywriting etched on it is a little… impoverished.

Facebook user Mick Price posted about United Overseas Bank’s newly launched UOB Reserve Card — a card that’s only handed out to folks with at least $2 million worth of assets under the bank’s management. Singapore’s first diamond-embellished card comes with benefits that would please the richest of the rich: 100,000 frequent flyer miles, access to more than 1,000 airport lounges worldwide, complimentary concierge services and limousine transfers, a four-hour private yacht experience with champagne included, as well as special rates and perks at participating luxury hotels.

What you don’t get, however, is good grammar.

“For those who value exclusivity in it’s most extinguished form,” the plaque reads. First of all, it should be “its.” Second of all, “extinguished form”? Is this exclusivity in flames? Surely they mean “distinguished” — and surely a sub-editor took a gander at the copy first before they rolled the plaques out? What was meant to be an extremely atas gift for the elite has turned into a loutish farce for UOB.

You can bet that the facepalm emoji was used to its limits in the comments section of Price’s post.

UOB has since apologized about the typos, according to The Straits Times.

“The promotional text that was printed only for a table display at a private event last night had been overlooked during our clearance process,” stated UOB Singapore’s head of cards and payments Choo Wan Sim, who added that the mistake would not happen again.
Editor’s Note: Article updated to include the statement by UOB Singapore.
