Looks like Changi Airport’s future Terminal 5 may be connected to two new MRT lines — the Thomson-East Coast and Cross Island ones. The decision hasn’t been confirmed, but plans are in motion to make the massive terminal — which is being built in Changi East and scheduled to open in the 2020s — more accessible for travellers.
As of now, the train journey to the airport includes a stop at Tanah Merah station to transfer to a shuttle train. But when the new lines come into play, this connection between Singapore Expo and Changi Airport will likely stop operations.
According to The Straits Times, the Thomson-East Coast Line, which will open in phases from 2019 to 2024, is set to stop at Terminal 5 before terminating at the existing Changi Airport MRT station. For the Cross Island Line, which is scheduled to be built by 2030, it will be connected to Changi East’s new industrial zone before it links to T5.
Since the Changi East development will feature a new industrial zone that includes aerospace and aviation-related businesses, a direct train link to the city will make the area more accessible.
