In Photos: SCDF’s 5-hour long oil tank fire battle in Jurong Island

After a 5-hour long scorching race against time, the Singapore Civil Defence Force managed to put out the blaze that had erupted from an oil storage tank in Jurong Island, with around 150 personnel involved in the battle.

Amidst heavy rain, the massive inferno broke out shortly before 3pm, producing a plume of black smoke that could be seen from afar. A video captured yesterday showed the oil tank collapsing into itself — such was the intensity of the fire.

Several ground water monitors were deployed to help cool down the two other oil storage tanks nearby to prevent the fire from spreading. Meanwhile, a large foam monitor sprayed gallons upon gallons of foam mixture to fight the fire itself.

It was at 7.45pm that the fire was extinguished. There was only one casualty from the incident — and even then it was a member of the in-house Company Emergency Response Team, who was sent to National University Hospital for heat exhaustion.
