We sure love our cheesy songs, and Spotify can prove it.
The music streaming service revealed yesterday Singapore’s top 10 guiltiest music choices from an analysis for over 120,000 playlists with the title “Guilty Pleasures”, and the results are cringe-worthy.
Coming in on top is Save Tonight by Swedish rock musician Eagle-Eye Cherry (which came out in 1997), with another pop tune from Sweden; All That She Wants by Ace Of Base. Coming in third – and probably the most embarrassing guilty pleasure – is Carly Rae Jepsen’s cloyingly sweet Call Me Maybe. The rest of the list includes the likes of Phil Collins (Sussudio), Daniel Powter (Bad Day), Plain White T’s (Hey There Delilah) and of course, Chumbawamba’s Tubthumping.
Spotify also reveals a list of guilty pleasures according to gender, with women considering unabashedly pop songs by One Direction, Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls as their shameful indulgence while the men would never dare admit listening to Britney Spears, Carly Rae Jepsen and Journey, although they do.
“We’re often guilty of reeling off the coolest tracks when quizzed on our musical tastes, so it’s brilliant to see that as a nation, we’ve still got time for a little cheese in our lives.” says Managing Director at Spotify Asia Sunita Kaur.
She also reminds Spotify users that they can switch on the private session functionality in their app to listen to absolutely anything they want without fear of judgement.
