Penalties to be revised after first train service disruption this year forces people to walk along tracks

A call was made to revise the penalty framework for train service disruptions after a major one between Kranji and Yew Tee MRT stations occurred on Jan. 11.

Details of the revision will be announced later this month.

The one and a half-hour service disruption is the first to occur in 2014 and commuters stuck between the two stations could be seen walking along the track around 12.30pm.

Free bus bridging services were activated between Woodlands and Yew Tee stations with some departing from Choa Chu Kang bus interchange.

In a statement given by transport operator SMRT on its Facebook page, a loss in traction power due to a cable fault is the cause of the disruption.

Investigations were then conducted by SMRT engineers to correct the issue.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) was also advised to better look into train operator’s maintenance and crisis management by a high-level Committee of Inquiry.

Last year, both SMRT and SBS were fined $1.1 million for five incidents — with SMRT paying $860,000 for four of them.
