A bill was proposed in Parliament yesterday enacting even stronger laws against animal cruelty and harsher penalties for animal abusers.
The Animals and Birds Act 2014 recommends owners to provide decent care for the animals under their wardship such as providing adequate shelter and nourishment without endangering the well-being of the animal. In case the animal goes missing, owners will have to take reasonable efforts to recover it. Staff in animal-related businesses must be trained with the proper knowledge and skills to ensure the optimal amount of healthcare for the animals under their charge.
The proposal also enacts stricter punishments for those found guilty of animal cruelty — offenders can be fined up to $40,000 and/or jailed for two years.
