The shadowy secrets of beloved national para-athlete Adam Kamis came tumbling out last year when he was arrested for masterminding an illicit enterprise of prostitution that spanned over two years.
Once seen as an inspirational figure, the one-armed 37-year-old — who also did stints as a motivational speaker — has since been sentenced to 38 months in jail for vice-related offences and recruiting a child for sexual exploitation.
Last week, he was convicted under the Women’s Charter and the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act. In 2013, Adam had set up a social escort agency and auditioned up to 34 women in a meticulous recruiting process that included filling in explicit questionnaires and providing him sexual services. He would then create online profiles for them to advertise their services on Craigslist and Locanto.
One such woman who was recruited turned out to be a 16-year-old student — and Adam was given 20 months’ jail for that offence alone.
Adam’s wife was shocked to learn of his offences, according to The Straits Times, as she was unaware of his clandestine operation, which didn’t make any profit in the end. The wife hopes to apologise to the women involved in the case.
